defrag - scan is cancelled
Posted by LB on December 20th, 2007

I've just freshly reinstalled Windows XP Pro + Windows XP SP2 and security
updates. I would like to defrag my C drive but I receive this error:

"The scan has been canceled because an error occurred in file:
C:\I386\AMSINT.SYS"

Previous to this error, I got the same error message pertaining to:
C:\I386\AMSTREAM.DLL. I ran a registry cleaning program. After cleaning the
registry, it's the same error, but a different file.

I have run chkdisk already. I was able to successfully defrag two other
partitions on the same drive.

Thanks in advance for any help on this ~

My feeling is that have some difficult to remove malware.

You need to use an anti-spyware programme like Spybot S & D to check and
clean your syste. I doubt it will remove the problem, You will need to
download and install HijackThis and post to a specialist HijackThis
forum for help with removal.

May I suggest you downoad and run Spybot S & D.

Install and run HijackThis:
Download HijackThis (Freeware)

Finally run HijackThis and post the HijackThis log to the HijackThis
forum here:
http://aumha.net/

You will need to register with Aumha to be able to post.

You should dump the registry cleaner

WHY do you want to defrag a fresh installation?!

Are you an OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE?

Yoy should run Disk CleanUp and Disk Defragmenter after any major
changes. That's good practice.

Can you tell me more? Does AMSINT.SYS have to do with the video driver and
direct x? Today when I try to defrag I'm getting the same error on a
different file: ALIDE.SYS.

I am already using Panda. I did a full scan and my computer was squeaky clean.

Why dump the registry cleaner? It has really improved performance.

So far I have done the following:
- Restored 4 registry backups that Registry Mechanic had stored.
- Installed SpyBot, immunized and removed 11 "problems"
- Installed Hijack and posted the log file on Aumha

My problem still exhists.

Thanks,
- LB

Dump Registry Mechanic, which is most likely the cause of your problems.
