Defragmentation and CHKDSK problems

I am trying to defragment a drive that is almost 50% defragmented. Analysis
runs okay but DF crashes around 10% mark and reboots the computer. Same thing
happens whether I use XP defrag, Norton defrag or Diskeeper. Also CHKDSK /f
will not run beyond 20% of Stage 4. Hard drive just stops being active at
this point and I have to manually reboot the computer. Reboots so far have
been good but Microsoft On Line Crash Analysis tells me there is likely a
problem between Windows XP and 'Intel Storage Driver' but does not offer a
solution.

Anyone have any ideas what's happening and what I need to do to resolve my
problems?

See if the motherboard manufacturer or Intel have updated drivers for the
device.

Or you could try removing the device/s in Safe Mode > Device Manager, reboot and
Windows will re-detect and reinstall the drivers.
You may want to have a complete backup image of your drive/s first because it's
always a good safeguard should something go wrong.

Have you tried defragging in Safe Mode?

I had a similar problem when my computer started crashing regularly.
Turned out after much scouting around that the disk drive was faulty
approximately 50% in. As soon as any program reached the faulty part
for access the PC bluescreened. I tried a number of such programs:
- Antivirus full scan
- CHKDSK
- Seagate disk check utility
- The defrag utility thta comes with XP

Strangely Norton Ghost managed to create a copy of the drive without
crashing, don't know why or how.

Had to replace the drive.

If your system has the Intel Application Accelerator installed,
that's likely the cause of your issues. It has some known issues
with XP. You didn't mention your motherboard Chipset, so it's
hard to give definitive answers. I would scroll through the Add
Remove applet listing and scan for the Intel Accelerator App &
remove it, if found. Then use Everest Home Edition to determine
which Chipset is used on your motherboard. Download/Install
the latest Chipset driver package. Afterwards, check the IDE
category of Device Manager (View, Tic "Show Hidden Devices")
make sure the correct controller is shown.
Then before attempting a Chkdsk with Repair clean up the
disk TIF (Temporary Internet Files), Temp folders and all the
individual .Tmp & ~ prefaced work files. I would also purge all
the System Restore points. (Defrag needs free space to work
with.).
Any disk tool that pauses/hangs at around ~10% is probably at
the MFT on the drive and that's never a good thing. I would
make sure my personal data is backed up and a System Image
is taken of the XP instance.
