- deleting a so called 'system vol info file'
- Posted by frankg on September 28th, 2005
I had a debacle with my internal hard drive and the external usb hard drive
used for backups. In the only partially successful recovery process, I have
ended up with a folder on my internal data drive (separate partition) that i
know for sure doesnt belong. It was created during the restoration process,
in fact, i created it as a destination folder to restore to (I called it
attempted_recovery_1). It allows itself to be renamed. There are two things
in the folder - one is a folder called 'system volume information' and
another called 'recycler' which i believe was put there by the
backup/restore program 'retrospect express'. In tools>folder options>view, I
have unchecked 'hide system files' & selected 'show hidden files'. Problem
is that I cant delete it now - when I try the error message is " Cannot
delete System Volume Information: Access denied. make sure the disk is not
full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use".
Thank you

If this is a second hard drive installed on XP, these two files are
mandatory. System volume info can only be deleted before windows starts, but
will be returned when windows does start. It contains the ntfs info for you
to be able to use it as a drive. The recycler can be removed by going to the
Recycle bin and selecting Properties, there are tabs with Global, and one for
each drive you have. You can tell windows not to use the recycle bin for
each of the drives and how much to use. With the info you've given, the
restoration process did not work, you just have a new partition.

I have two hard drives and each has 2 partitions.
On this hard drive XP is installed on one partition. On this second
partition, there is already a folder called System volume info. So the
folder called System volume info within the folder called
attempted_recovery_1 is another one. When I look at the properties (rt
click) on each System volume info, they both show 0 bytes & 0 files

Try changing the permissions on the folder to allow full access. Then
try to delete it.

I just looked up how to do 'Set, view, change, or remove special permissions
for files and folders' down the page over here
http://support.microsoft.com/default...n-us;Q308419#4 but there
is no security tab under properties. I am the only user and admin on this
macchine at home ( a small 3 machine p2p)

If XP Pro turn off Simple File Sharing. Open Windows Explorer, go to
Tools | Folder Options | View. Untic "Use simple file sharing
(recommended". If XP Home you must login as the Administrator in safe
mode to get there.
