I know this is off topic but this is the most frequently updated and used
group on microsoft and I hope someone can help.

I am using a Dell Latitude D500 laptop, running Windows Xp Pro. When I plug
in the power cable to charge it nothing happens. The charging light usually
blinks. When I load up windows it doesnt recognize that I have plugged in
the cable. It thinks it is still using the battery.

I dont think that power pack is to blame as the green light is on and when I
measure the voltage using my multimeter it says its running at 19.5 volts as
it should.

Anyone have any idea what is happening?

also check with Dell for updates. it may be a known problem

No I am not. I use this laptop off the internet. Would this be a software
problem? It feels hardware related.

Usually, the connector inside the notebook has worked loose or is
intermittent. When you plug the adapter into the socket does it fit
snugly or have any play (Wiggle). I've seen this same condition on
a number of Inspiron models but not many Latitudes. You should
probably post on the Dell Forum and check if it's a known issue.
Power units are very frequently recalled and your system may need
a replacement.

thinking that it could be a windows power management type problem but the
SP2 installer package says I need to have it plugged into a AC power supply
to run it!!! So I am screwed that way too.

Is the plug that inserts into the power socket a round plug ? (Follows
the AC/DC standards). Some Latitude models use a non-standard
plug that has a shape similar to the little green Monopoly houses.

One thing to try maybe to shut off the notebook, remove the Battery
pack and insert the DC plug in and try to boot up. You may also have
a converter cable with a broken internal wire. Sometimes if you insert
the plug and press the cable right at the plug you'll get contact.

Also have you changed any of the Power profiles ?

Call Dell tech support and have them send out a new motherboard. I just
had to do this with my Inspiron. It is the charging board that is
failing and the only way to fix it is with a new m/b.

but there is a fair bit of movement. I have tried taking out the battery
and plugging it in and booting it up to no avail. I am out of warranty with

You can charge the battery in another similar Dell laptop, but you have
a broken charging system, and should contact Dell.

I've repaired broken sockets for folks, a good shop can resolder it.

Probably - I like the variation on that from Shrek-2 "Looks like we're
up Chocolate Creek without a Popsicle Stick". Malke maybe right in
her analysis that the charging board is defective/going bad. Notebook
repair isn't cheap and a motherboard swap is not something the average
user should take on. Anyway Good Luck with it.

Since the machine is out of warranty, it is really your choice what to
do. If you want to use the laptop, you will need to call Dell and pay
for a new motherboard and for the servicing (you'll probably need to
send it back to Dell). No other motherboard but the one that was
designed for your specific laptop will work. There is no getting around
this. If replacing the motherboard and having it serviced costs more
than a new laptop, then that is the choice you will have to make.
