Desktop icons are continually "regenerated" - why? How to stop this?
Posted by david.f.jenkins@usa.net on December 4th, 2005

Using Windows XP Pro SP2, all updates applied.

Everytime I exit a program (IE is a good example), I see that all (or
at least pretty much all) of the icons on my desktop are "regenerated".
That is, they start out as a little generic screen icon, and then are
replaced by the apropriate icon. I don't know whether this happens
only for shortcuts - I just haven't noticed. This whole process takes
5 seconds or so, and is aggravating.

What's going on here? Is there any way to keep this from happening?
BTW, I have another computer that's also using XP Pro SP2, and this
does NOT happen on that system...

Thanks.

Well, I guess I need to backtrack - just a little: it doesn't happen
*every* time I quit something and return to the desktop - it happens
sporadically. I haven't determined the exact conditions under which
this happens - if I break the code, I'll append that here.

I'm afraid the icon problem is just part of the eXPerience. XP stands
for eXPerience, but nobody said it would be a pleasant one. Perhaps
you can stop the icon refresh by using this link>scroll down to number

Thanks for the pointer. I'm loath to make registry changes that I
don't know the exact effect of - do you know anything about this tweak?

Is the problem (feature?) that I'm describing something that others
also experience?

I've used that tweak without ill effects, your mileage may vary.

The icon refresh in XP has prompted several complaints:
