- Desktop Icons & Taskbar Missing

Hi
We have a member of staff that has had a problem with a home computer:
They said that they had: Trogan.intell32 and Jupites.B
When they login they get the error: The computer loads up but then displays
message "Explorer.EXE - Application Error" and says it failed to initialize
properly and gives a reference of 0x20000022.
They managed at one point to run Windows Defender which cleaned the malware
but they are left with no Desktop Icons and Taskbar.
Also they can boot fine in safe mode.
Any advice would be much apprecitated.

try pressing ALT-CTRL-DEL to the taskmanager will appear, go to proccesess.
find any proccesses with explorer.exe and terminate them (there might not be
any)
then go to Filen>New Task (run) and type "explorer" without the quotes
this will start the explorer shell and you will have icons and taskbar...
then go http://www.computerboom.net/security/
download the free antivirus (if you dont have one yet) and antispyware
and do scans...
if even after the scans the problem perists, then try a system restore,
to a point BEFORE you got infected.

Hi John & Malke
Thank you both for your posts, he has tried both of your soluctions here are
his responses:
I got to the task manager, typed in explorer but got the response
"application failed to initilaize properly (0x20000022). Click OK to
terminate the application " so couldn't do anything in normal mode.
I got into safe mode but computer doesn't allow you to do system restore on
safe and kept telling me I'd have to log in on normal mode! I was able to
do safe mode with networking to go online and also do spy/virus searches etc
but still can't load start up in "normal mode".

It is completely possible to clean an infested computer without using
explorer.exe but it does take some skill and being comfortable with the
commandline. A better solution would be for your employee - since this
is a *home* machine - to take the computer to a professional computer
repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA). If the person
involved is your boss... you have my sympathies.
