- Desktop Shortcut Problem
- Posted by Frank on October 24th, 2005
On winXP Home SP2. Lately the Desktop Icons for My Computer, My Documents,
and Recycle Bin have stopped working. I get a msg that they are not
assigned to any program. All the other shortcuts work fine. Anyone know
how to fix this????

Frank,
Check at Kelly's. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm
Select S and scroll to Shortcuts and select R
and scroll to Recycle Bin.

Frank,
See if this command helps from Start, Run:
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
Restart Windows. If that does not help, use System Restore to rollback the
system state:

I ran the regsrv32 cmd and it fixed the problem, thanks. Only problem is,
it created a new one. Now the folders on my desktop won't open, says NO
ASSOCIATION. They were working fine before. All the folders open just fine
in Explorer, just not the ones on the desktop. Any ideas?? By the way, I
cannot run windows restart because I don't know haw long ago this went bad.

Apply the directory & folder association fixes from here:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
BTW, registering the shell32 does not create any such problems.
