Device manager Blank
Posted by anonymous@mailinator.com on May 7th, 2008

I just upgraded my Win XP machine with Service Pack 3. I am not sure
if the problem started then or before but when I click on Control
Panel-System-Hardware Tab-Device Manager I get a blank screen. Nothing
is populated in the device manager window but the window does say
device manager.

I looked online and found a note stating that this can occur if Plug
and Play service is turned off.

My service is turned on (set to automatic) but I noticed the options
to start, stop, pause and resume are all greyed out. Is this normal?

Any ideas on how to get my device manager back?

Thanks in advance,

Best bet is to uninstall SP3.

[Not SP3, as a service pack]

This is pitty strange that the device manager goes blank after XP SP3
installation,I pushed SP3 on almost 10 PCs thru SMS and that gave me
the me result.

For me the only solution that worked out was deleting a few registry
keys...for all PCs!I don't know how can a service pack corrupt all
registries.

OK heres the way out

Start>Run>Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\R oot\LEGACY_CCPROXY
All the corrupt entries ( which for me all began with $%& ) had
to be deleted.

Make sure you take a backup of ur keys before proceeding and if
possible compare it with a working XP Machine...

Hope this works!!

Fazal,

You are the man. I found quite a few registry entries starting with
$&&. They were all under various legacy symantec keys in the
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root branch. After deleting all of
them, things seem to be fine.

Thanks,
