Device Manager missing devices(Windows XP Home edition)
Posted by Tony on October 27th, 2005

Any help on how to retify this problem? My devices are not showing up in the
device manager and I cannot install scanners or cameras. I restored to an
earlier restore point and it worked for short time and then disappeared
again. I would like not to reinstall XP Home edition again to fix this
problem because I have a lot programs on my computer that will have to be
reinstalled after that.
Thanks.

Which devices ? - some or all, the Devil is in the details.
Reinstalling XP to overcome that type of issue isn't necessary. That's
like replacing the whole engine to fix a clogged filter.

Is your Chipset driver package up to date ? Have you removed
the "Phantom" devices in the categories your problem devices
belong to ?

I want to compare my config to yours because I have the same problem. Someone
will no doubt chip in with the PnP disabled answer they are feeding everyone,
but that's not it so don't waste a second of your life trying what they tell
you.

So, because I'm in the same boat with WinXP Home AND WinXP Pro and also don't
want to reinstall, I am trying to get to the bottom of this problem.

Can you post your hardware specs here. These are my specs, if you can provide
your equivalents it would be useful:

CPU: AMD 3500+
MB: Gigabyte K8NSNXP-939 (nForce 3)
GPU: NVidia GeForce 6800 GT
Sound: Hercules GTXP 5.1
RAM: 2Gb (2x1gb)
HDD: 3x70 Gb SATA
DVD: 2x drives
USB: Wireless Mouse, Wired Kb, Webcam, TrackIR, Joystick, Palm Pilot.

Have you applied the latest nVidia Chipset driver package ?
Use the nVidia menu page, select Platform/nForce drivers &
then the nForce 1/2/3 and finally your specific XP platform.

If I hadn't before, it's updated now - I usually keep things in pretty
mint condition in terms of drivers - but no, the nForce drivers appear
to have nothing to do with the problem. Search the forum for my name
to see root cause of the problem.

Sorry it didn't address your specific issue. Believe I'll pass on
back searching the thread history.

the Devil is in the heart of man.
He loves it when we invent products that we have to create newsgroups
to go to just to look for fix-its.......
oh yes Mc, the devil is not in the product, he is in the heart.

As Don Henley's "The Garden of Allah" quotes the Devil -

""Things were a lot more fun around here - before things got
so Fuzzy"".

I think there is a conflict from windows update downloads and the device
manager.
I restored to Oct 3rd and every time I downloaded from windows update I lost
the device manager information. Without the downloads everything works fine.
There are about 8 downloads and I will have to experiment to see which one is
causing the problem.
Good luck!
