Via an encryption program, I have a virtual drive that I only mount when
necessary to copy files to it. (When not mounted, it is an encrypted file
itself.)

I have been losing all my restore points the past couple of months. I
finally found out about the Windows event viewer, and there are a number of
errors there from System Restore, all referring to the drive letter I assign
to the virtual drive (B.

I never realized, but obviously System Restore is trying to monitor it
somehow, then is unable to find it later. The errors cause it to stop
creating restore points, and all my previous points get deleted.

I'd like to stop System Restore from doing this. I can't turn it off on
drive B: when the virtual drive isn't mounted; it doesn't show up. I've
tried mounting it for a short time, hoping I can get it to show up in System
Restore's list and turn it off before SR gets corrupted with it -- but even
after 5-10 minutes, B: doesn't appear. I don't know how long it takes for a
newly-mounted drive to appear in the SR settings, but I'm really afraid of
losing all my critical restore points again.

Can anyone help? Is there any way to disable SR on this virtual drive
letter B: without corrupting itself again? And, once the drive is unmounted,
will the turned-off B: setting stay in System Restore?

Disable SR and start using ERUNT

Hi,

External hard drives present a similar problem with System Restore.
System Restore by default will try to monitor every partition it sees.
In the case of an external drive, assigning a permanent drive letter can
sometimes keep System Restore from monitoring it, which you seem to have
tried. I suspect that the only choice is to choose between System
Restore or the virtual drive.
