Disabling or turning off Windows Firewall
Posted by AllenM on January 4th, 2006

I have an application that is giving me problems with the install. It is
recommended by the manufacturer to turn off all anti virus and Windows
Firewall before installing. When I open my Windows Firewall settings the
option to turn off Windows Firewall is greyed out as well as the defualt
"on" selection which obviously I cannot change either. Why is that and how
do I go about turning off Windows Firewall so that I may install this
application.

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Security Center. At the bottom of the
Security Center window you will see the 'settings' area, clock on the
Firewall and you should get the window for turning it off or on.....or is
this what you are seeing as 'greyed out?'
Are you running another firewall app besides the Windows firewall?

You must have administrator privileges to turn the firewall off.

I am an administrator of both local machine and domain.

Has some removed "Administrator" from various NTFS directories? I've seen
people do this before to prevent Administrators from "seeing" their data.
(don't ask :-) )

I wonder is it actually turned on anyway? By which I mean maybe the WPF
service is disabled. If not, without solving the question of why it's
'greyed out', you could perhaps stop the Windows Firewall running by setting
the service to disabled then rebooting - that is unless you can't for the
same reason it's greyed out.

Otherwise I'd suggest booting to Safe Mode and trying.

Same results.

Bingo!!! Thanks Shane. All I had to do was disable the service.

an app installer that asks you to turn off the firewall is a bit dubious!
disabling AV auto scanning is "normal" tho.

try running it w/ FW on anyway. _IF_ that should fail and you want to try
it w/ the FW turned off, by all means DISCONNECT all means to the internet
first (unplug network etc). DONT TURN OFF YOUR FIREWALL W/ AN ACTIVE
CONNECTION.

I usually always install w/ net access OFF; I don't like installers that
insist on calling home. Get the app running, check/setup its
options/preferences, then allow it to connect if it wants.

Hello , Even if you disable "Windows Firewall" , the Security Center will
show Firewall is "On" when there is yet another firewall or a "Personal
Firewall" enabled . Wireless routers will have a "Setup" page .. check this
firewall setting also .

Turning off the service will disable Windows Firewall which is the only one
I'm concerned about. There are no others. Thanks for the input.

Great. I just hope you re-enabled it before going online, if you don't have
another firewall.
