Disk defrag for XP
Posted by Daniel Kaplan on October 21st, 2005

Two part question:

Curious, can the Disk Defrager that comes with XP Home run inthe Normal
startupmode? I remember with 98 that wasn't such a good thing. Especially
if the screensaver kicked. So was hoping this was a newer and better
version.

If the above is true, is it possible to set it run on a schedule?
Automatically?

Thanks ahead,

p.s. if you see this in 2000 newsgroup, not a double posting, I have the
same question for 2000

Hello Daniel,

The Disk Defragmeter in Windows XP is much better than the ones you might have experienced on
Windows 9X systems. No, it does not restart automatically everytime your screensaver kicks in and it
does a pretty good job at defragmenting the hard disk.

You can also set scheduled tasks to defrag your disk on a regular basis.

the best defrager for XP is perfectdisk 7 by roxco (make sure you have the
latest update)
the XP defrag is limited.

Perhaps so. But, there is never a real need/requirement to buy, or
install a third party defragger for XP.

you are incorrect. MS acknowlages disk fragmentation as a big problem.

The built in one is insuficient.

Its best to run the Disk defragmenter that comes with windows in safe
mode to be on the safer side to avoid anything at all interrupting
with its job. Also the built in does not defrag the MFT and paging
file, for that you will need third party tools which are also pretty
faster and some of then can be scheduled to run even while the system
is functioning.

well geez! if kenchi's suggestions are right, that would mean that the

Hi Daniel,

The Disk Defragmenter tool is based on the full retail version of Diskeeper
by Executive Software International, Inc. The version that is included with
Microsoft Windows 2000 and later provides limited functionality in
maintaining disk performance by defragmenting volumes that use the FAT, the
FAT32, or the NTFS file system. I do not think it means the tool is no good
even though there are some limitations of Disk Defragmenter tool in Windows
XP. For related information, you may refer to:

227463: Disk Defragmenter Limitations in Windows 2000, Windows XP, and
Windows Server 2003

For additional information about the limitations of Disk Defragmenter and
improvements in Windows XP, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
<http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/01/12/xpkernel/default.aspx>

Hope that help!

Computerworld just did a pretty good review (link below) of PerfectDisk
vs. Diskeeper vs. XP (free) The end kinda sums up that PerfectDisk does
the most complete job.

I have xp formatted fat32 defrag32.exe (not the virus) runs when the system
is idle. it is not a "scheduled task" it just runs. How do I turn the silly
thing off? I have gone so far as renaming it and it just keeps coming back.
It makes me crazy!

Thanks.

What do you have in your Scheduled Tasks? If you have some sort of "PC
Tune-up", there's your culprit. I have 6 Windows XP boxen and none of
them run a defrag unless I tell them to.

It is apparently NOT a defrag but an auto optimization which Microsoft
decided we all need and so put it in XP. It runs EVERYTIME my system is idle
and it is making me NUTS! I have NOTHING in my scheduled tasks and I use NO
tune-up of any kind. I want my system to do what I want, WHEN I want, and not
when XP THINKs it needs to be done.

AGAIN, I plead - HOW DO I TURN IT OFF - OR CAN I ????

What have you done to the system that causes it to need to auto-optimize
all the time? I've found that attempted "optimization" by the user,
frequently results in a perfectly functioning doorstop.
