Disk Defragmenter Problem
Posted by Kurt on October 9th, 2005

Hi-
I get an error everytime I run Disk Defragmenter in Windows XP, details as
follows:

Title bar: Disk Defragmenter NTFS Module
Description: Disk Defragmenter NTFS Module has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Error Signature: AppName: dfrgntfs.exe AppVer: 5.1.2600.2180 ModName:
dfrgntfs.exe
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 00006942

Basically it just doesn't run. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
-Kurt

May be some of the core system components required to run the Defrag
utility got corrupted.
Start>Run>type in:"Certmgr.msc "(without any quote)>ok
Navigate through Trusted Root Certification Authority / Certificates to
Microsoft Test Root Authority>Remove the Microsoft Test Root Authority
entry>Restart

Hello-

Thanks for the suggestion. There are only three entries that begin with
'Microsoft':
Microsoft Authenticode(tm) Root Authority
Microsoft Root Authority
Microsoft Root Certificate Authority

Should there be one with 'Test' included in the name?

Regards.

If that test certificate is not there then do the following:-

Start>Run>In the "Open" field type SFC /PURGECACHE >ok
[Make sure that there is a space between SFC and /PURGECACHE]

Start>Run>In the "Open" field type SFC /SCANNOW>ok (Make sure that there is
a space between SFC and /SCANNOW)
