- Disk defragmention tool
- Posted by Richard M on November 6th, 2005
Good Day - I run XP Professional with all updates installed. However, when I
try to defragment the disk it says: "No defragmentation tool installed". I
checked the windows components, but can't find anything.
Please help.

Richard,
* Open your search tool, type in dfrg.msc (check 'Advanced Options' box,
check first 3 options inside 'Advanced Options'), clcick 'Search Now'.
Do you have the Defag app in your System 32 folder? Either way, try this:
* insert WinXP-SP2 CD
* Start > Run > type sfc /scannow (note space bewteen sfc /), OK
* Scan should begin verifying files are in place & not corrupted

Reinstall the Defragmentation Tools. To do this, type the following in the
Run dialog box,
INF
This should bring up the hidden INF folder in the Windows directory. Now
locate and highlight, "dfrg.inf". Right click this file and select install.
You may need your XP CD to complete the process. If you installed a Service
Pack, you may need to point to this location "windows\servicepackfiles\i386"
for the required files.

Richard,
Fix the "DefragPath" value in this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\DefragPath
Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT.
Navigate to the above location:
In the right-pane, double-click (default) and set it's data to:
%systemroot%\system32\dfrg.msc %c:
(if REG_EXPAND_SZ)
C:\Windows\system32\dfrg.msc %c:
(if REG_SZ)
Alternately, reinstalling Defrag using the INF file should fix the above
value automatically. The following was recently posted by Bert Kinney:

The following file is located in a hidden folder.
To view hidden files follow these steps:
Open Control Panel - Folder Options - View tab, select "Show hidden
files and folders" and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types",
click OK.
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the windows\inf folder.
Find the dfrg.inf file, right click on it and select Install. You may
be asked for the XP CD.
