DNS/NetBIOS names conflicting in CIFS
Posted by YZ on October 2nd, 2005

I'm accessing my computer's file shares usings its DNS hostname; this is
different from its NetBIOS name, so I get errors accessing my shares (I've
tried several machines to make sure). I use dynamic DNS, so I can't
(conveniently) simply map to the IP in the HOSTS file (or the similar file
for NetBIOS names), and typing in the IP every time is a pain. How do I get
around this? Thanks in advance.

Write a script to do that.

BTW, what errors do you get?

What happens if you use the fully qualified domain name? Obviously, if
convenience is a priority, it would be advisable to have the host name match
the NetBIOS name.
