- Do I need a firewall when connected via a router?
- Posted by Smirnoff on February 7th, 2006
I have a BT Voyager 2091 router connected to my PC via ethernet, as per
instructions.
Trend Micro Internet Security 2006 is my firewall.
I seem to remember reading that if you had a router connection, a firewall
was unnecessary.
Is this correct?

Depends, it's like doing 5 of 6 things. It lowers your overall exposure
but doesn't close it off completely. My personal opinion is even with a
Router (NAT) it's still best to run a 3rd-Party Firewall application.

I thought I might be overdoing it a bit with belt and braces and possibly
causing a conflict.
As there is no problem I'll plod on as I am.
Thanks

Hi,
While a router does provide a substantial layer of protection, you should
still engage the firewall in most circumstances. Suppose one machine behind
the router got infected? The router provides for NAT in most cases, which
will limit activity to that initiated from behind it, but it's not perfect
in blocking all unwanted traffic.

If you manage to download a trojan that's calling out (with yoru credit

Seems like you have 2 firewalls already. Which is more than enough.

Yes, that is correct.
