Don't fall for "Windows copy Piracy Protection" fraud email
Posted by Don Taylor on September 25th, 2005

This is the first "Windows piracy protection" fraud mail I've seen.

The little net vandal is using
http://m a i l h o s t.a n c 2 0 0 0.co.uk/www.microsoft.com/productkey/features/activation.aspx.php
(where I have inserted those spaces to keep you from accidentally
getting sucked into this fraud)

Yet one more little net vandal out there trying to hijack your system.

Reported to all the appropriate abuse addresses

Microsoft is committed to the protection of intellectual property rights
and the reduction of software piracy. Everyone in the economic chain-not
just the software manufacturer-is hurt by piracy, including the reseller,
the support provider, and you, the end user. Authentic Microsoft software
assures you of high-quality, virus-free software. Pirated software does not.

Microsoft Windows product activation works by verifying that a software
program's product key has not been used on more personal computers than
intended by the software's license. You must use the product key in order
to install the software and then it is transformed into an product ID number.

Microsoft have indication that your product key is registered on personal
computers not intended in software license. This is in violation of Microsoft
software piracy terms of use.

You have a week grace period in which to activate your Windows product key.
If the grace period expires and you have not completed activation your
Windows copy will become illegal. Software piracy is the illegal reproduction
and distribution of software applications, whether for business or personal use.
Software piracy is criminal and Microsoft do not tolerate such activity.

Microsoft Windows product activation takes less than one minute when
completed over the Internet. If activation is completed in this way,
the product will take care of most of the work and will require very little
user participation and knowlage.
During activation, you can also register your copy of Windows.
Registration is not required; however registering your copy ensures
Would probably fool more people if they got the spelling and grammar
in the body of the message correct also.

<snip>

Yep. MS's own fraud inspires other conmen. No surprise there. The
only real surprise is that it took so long.
