Downloaded Program Will Not Install
Posted by gbdav49 on October 31st, 2005

Hello,
Hope you might help me with an issue I'm having.
I downloaded a program using a P2P program,which has always worked
great, but now,I have downloaded a program successfully and it came in
the form of a zip file. When I highlight the zip file and extract the
files,it shows me a setup file,but when I double-click on the setup
file, the hour glass shows up for just a second, then goes away.I went to
properties for the file and tried to change the compatability option,as
I'm running Windows XP Pro,to Windows 98,but still,it will not do
anything.I had the same problem on a couple other programs I downloaded
a few days ago.
Can you PLEASE advise me on the issue and a resolution????
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Eagerly awaiting your reply

Hi,

Have you scanned for viruses? A common means of distribution on P2P is to
disguise the virus as a legitimate program. When the user tries to run it,
it does exactly what you describe, but in reality it has quietly (meaning
hidden execution) infected the system as you just gave it permission to.

Hello,
Thank for the post.Yeah, when I first downloaded it,my anti virus (AVG)
gave me a virus warning, a trojan horse, but i quickly isolated it and
got rid of it.Then,I ran Spybot S&D,and Ad-Aware SE,and got rid of all
critical objects. What I did find though was it was not the full version
file as the full version is 130mbs,and the file I downloaded was only
15.5 kbs. That told me something was wrong. But with the help of my Big
Seester,I found the rightr file, and got it downloade and installed. It's
working great now.
Once again thanks for your input and have a great day!!!!

Sounds like you also downloaded a virus. It may be too late to fix your
pc.
