Can anyone tell me why my downloaded files have an microsoft word icon or a
explorer icon and how do i change this back to its original way of opening a
file. I think i may have changed this by accident and now they permantly
download in either of these formats

Not exactly "Formats". They just try to open with those programs. If you open
any random folder, press "Tools" then "Folder Options" and go to the tab
"File Types", then you will be able to change associations of documents and
make them open in different programs. (EG. PNG, BMP, GIF and JPG in
mspaint.exe)
