Dreaded Error Message
Posted by Scott on October 5th, 2005

Hi,

Sometimes, when trying to install a program (on Windows XP/SP2), I receive
this message: "xxx.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience." I also have the option to send or not send the
error report. Since this doesn't happen much, I'm guessing there is a
conflict with some other software installed on my machine. Could there be a
generic conflict that interferes with the installation of only certain
programs? Are there any software developement tools/debuggers that could help
to isolate the conflict? Thank you so much for any help.

Please don't post the same query twice.

The roots of your problem might be some sort of software conflict,
but it's more likely Windows is working as designed.

I greatly reduced the frequency of these troubles with one simple
expedient: when booting, or when opening or closing a program, I
don't do anything else till the disk light stops flashing. (That
includes plugging and unplugging devices.)

For all its touting as multithreaded, Windows XP seems _very_
vulnerable to synchronization problems during program open and close,
though it's much less vulnerable to running a bunch of programs at
once in what we might call "steady state".

I also try to shut down all programs and log off before going into
Hibernate -- I've found programs behave erratically when I return
from Hibernate and they're still open.
