- Dual Boot
- Posted by akela on October 8th, 2005
I am running Windows 98 2ed on C and D drive. On one hard drive 40GB and XP
Pro (E and F) on another hard drive 40 GB. I want to make XP pro the only op
system. But when I remove the hard drive with 98 on it and try to reboot it
will not come up. My intention is to leave XP Pro on the 40 GB drive make it
C and D. and format the other drive. Any suggestions?

Hi,
Your boot files are on C, regardless of where the operating system files
are. You would need to run fixboot from the Recovery Console without the
Win98 disk installed, but that will only allow you to boot the XP
installation. It will not allow you to change it to "C", to do that would
require a start from scratch with no other lettered drives installed.

Thanks,
I have switched the HD's so XP is now the master. And I have adjusted the
Boot.ini file so only XP comes up. But I see what you are saying that the
boot.ini is in C so I have to get is it boots to XP and does not look for the
other HD. You are right I will need luck. OH I have boot magic on XP can I
use this to change the drive letters around and then get rid of (*?

Hi,
No, regardless of anything else you cannot change the drive letter assigned
to the system installation.
