Duplicate Registry Keys
Posted by Jeff on September 25th, 2005

Hi,

I'm not sure if I have a problem, or not.

I have been struggling trying to make a scanner work in various applications
in XP. I have removed references to the scanner prior to a reinstallation,
and that involved registry modification.

One thing I noticed was that there are multiple duplicate registry keys. For
example, "HP_5590Series.Scanner" and "HP_5590Series.Scanner.1". There are
many examples of these.

What do these keys represent? And, more importantly, would it be beneficial
to clean them up? If so, how do I clean them up?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Jeff

Why don't you give us a hint? Like what registry key?

To copy a registry key name

1. In the registry tree (on the left), click a registry key.
2. On the Edit menu, click Copy Key Name.
3. Paste the name of the registry key into another program or document.

Or...

1. In the registry tree (on the left), right click a registry key.
2. Select Copy Key Name.
3. Paste the name of the registry key into another program or document.

Wesley,

I thought I did give you a hint. Unless I am using the term incorrectly, one
example of what I am calling a duplicate key in the registry is
HP_5590Series.Scanner

Jeff,

HP_5590Series.Scanner may be a Value Name, but I doubt that it is a key.

The registry is organized in a hierarchical structure of subtrees and their
keys, subkeys, and entries.

The contents of the registry for one computer may vary widely from that of
another, depending on the devices, services, and programs installed on each
computer.

Keys can have subkeys and subkeys can, in turn, have subkeys.

Keys are the next level down from subtree, which contain at least one subkey
(for example, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE).

Telling us HP_5590Series.Scanner is incomplete, it's like saying your home
address is 1019, not enough information.

You are going to way to much work to get the scanner reinstalled. Note
that each USB port you have connected to the scanner will have a
separate entry as a different device. Each uses the single driver you
install.

You can try this: connect the scanner to the computer. In scanners and
cameras control panel, delete the scanner entry. In device manager,
View menu, show hidden devices and delete anything about the scanner.
In add/remove programs, remove all scanner software and TWAIN. Shut
down. Disconnect the scanner. Reboot.

Now, go to HP and get the latest driver and software for XP. Read
exactly how HP wants the scanner installed. For example, is the scanner
to be connected to the computer during the driver installation or after
the driver installation? Usually USB devices are connected after the
driver and software are installed. If you do this the wrong way then
you will have problems with the scanner.

If there is no scanner driver explicitly for XP, then you are out of
luck trying to install the scanner unless there is a Win2k driver that
*might* work.

In applications that will support the scanner, you use the scanner TWAIN
from within that program using File/Import or something similar in the
File menu. This will autostart whatever scanner interface that HP
designs into the scanner software.

It's a fault of your driver installation setup software (the one for
scanner)
What probably happened you tried to reinstall drivers over old copy, and
installation packaged detected
"HP_5590Series.Scanner" key and renamed it to "HP_5590Series.Scanner.1".
instead of deleting it.
It's just another garbage in your registry files.
Registry Mechanic 5.0 should be able to clean it up.
