Any ideas why 75% of my DVDs will not play, since reinstall xp pro?

Using win media, player that came with DVD player, DivX player; all with
latest downloads / updates.

Paul, try PowerDvD or WinDvD. Take a look at this site
http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/software/players/

Go to the mftr.'s website for the "player that came with DVD player".
See if there are updates to the program. Many programs needed
updates/patches for SP2 including WinDVD from many OEM's (Dell, HP,
Sony, etc.). If you have an OEM machine like that, go to their tech
support website for your specific model machine and download and
install the latest version of the player.

all free downloads that I find are:

"win warning that the publisher could not be verified. Do you want to
install?"

what's up with that?

I cannot tell you "what's up with that" because you haven't told us the
name of the program you are using and from where you have downloaded
the update.

I don't know anything about tomdownload.com so you will have to make up
your own mind if it is a good site. Intervideo.com is legitimate; they
are the makers of WinDVD which is one of the players that someone
suggested you use. I can't speak for how well Audacity works on
Windows; it works fine on Linux. Sourceforge is well-respected in the
open source community.

If you are sure the tomdownload.com is a good site and you have scanned
it with your av, set a restore point and go ahead and install the
program.

well, I emailed Intervideo and I got an auto response promising me an
answer, but I never got that.

3 more DVD players installed and many of my DVDs still do not play. DVDs
that I burn will not play, even on the Burner's player.
