- explorer 6.0 xp sp2 virus disabling popup blocker help!
- Posted by highlandertn@gmail.com on November 20th, 2005
Hi,
I'm having some trouble with explore 6.0 with xp sp 2. For whatever
reason the popup blocker is defaulting to OFF rather than on. Not a
huge deal but I'd still like to know whats causing it and (more
importantly) how to fix it.
Thanks!
Sanjay

Sounds like adware or spyware. Have you checked your system with AdAware
or Spybot Search & Destroy? Also, Microsoft's Beta AntiSpyware is pretty
thorough.
I don't use Internet Explorer myself, but I've run into it on customer's
machines a lot. It's usually caused by adware.

Menno,
The 'Real Time Protection' works alright. The scanner needs a lot of work
though,

I tried Spybot and Adaware and didn't find anything that could be
causing the problem. I didnt try the MS product based on the above
warnings. Is there a way for me to reinstall explorer? Or am I stuck
with firefox?

It definitely isn't polished yet. I've had it installed and keep it
updated, although I have it removed from the startup group. The real time
protection was getting a little annoying to me. But I'll start it up,
update it, and scan my computer with it once in a while. Sometimes it'll
find stuff that the others don't. Actually, I rarely find *anything* on
any of my computers.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to help solve my problem?

Sure. If you don't have a current version full-featured antivirus
installed (not earlier than 2004) with an active subscription and
updated definitions, start scanning with either Sysclean or Dave
Lipman's Multi-AV. After that scan, get, install, and update a
full-featured av and do a thorough scan in Safe Mode. It would be smart
to also scan for non-viral malware, too.
Instructions for Sysclean and general malware removal are here:

Dave Lipman's Multi-AV is here:
