Explorer.exe issues
Posted by Hebdenlad on November 19th, 2007

Hi,
My Toshiba Tecra laptop running Windows XP has issues with explorer.exe
taking up 50% CPU and causing the whole machine to freeze which then requires
a reboot to free it up again.

I'm patched up to date and run MS Office 2003 and IE7.

I'm at a loss on this one and would really appreciate a solution from anyone
out there who knows how to fix this.

Regards,

Phil

Some form of Malware may be responsible. It's also possible that you've
got a 3rd-Party explorer extension that could cause excessive CPU use.
I would run a on-line scan for Malware, Trend-Micro's Housecall is one
scan that might help. On the extensions, I would download and run a tool
called Shell Ext Viewer that will display 3rd-Party extensions.
Housecall is available here:

Shell Ext. Viewer download:

You could also consider posting in microsoft, internetexplorer.general - a
more dedicated group for IE7 problems
