This may be the wrong forum, but I hope somebody may help me.
I recently purchased an external hard drive which connects via my USB port.
I intended to use this drive to backup my essential data in case my C drive
fails. The backup drive is now identified as Drive (G).
I was thinking that by using this drive, in case my C drive fails, I could
recover date. I also assumed that if I deleted a file, I could recover it
from the G drive. However, using My Documents as an example, if I delete a
file, and then go to the G drive to recover it, I find that it too has been
deleted from My Documents. The same happens if I add or subtract a file from
any program,
I thought I could disconnect the G drive, then make a deletion or addition ,
but the same thing happens as soon as I connect the G drive. Are there any
suggestions how I can make the G drive a separate entity that will enter
changes only when I back up some files.
My computer is a Dell XPS and the USB is 2.0
TIA

For data you do not want deleted, make a separate folder in your external
drive and call it "backup" or whatever and Copy anything important there.
You can then copy and paste it back to where you want.
