Extracting corrupted files from Windows XP Professional setup disk

the following files were corrupted:
windowsroot\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

system32\drivers\ntfs.sys

I copied them from an old cloned D drive. and it still won't re boot. I
have tried
safe mode, safemode with networking, with command prompt, last known config
and normally. It sends me in a loop

What is the computer make and model. What exactly do you have by way of
a Windows XP CD?

Are you seeing a Stop Error Report? If yes what does it say?

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

What is the position regarding data on the disk? Did you have a backup
or is it necessary to recover data?

When I reboot, it prompts me to select operating system ; start normally.
Where can I find the corrupted files below, to reinstall them. I tried from
a cloned D drive, but I keep going in a loop, never getting to lonon or
desktop.

service paks 1 2, and 3 have been downloaded and installed.

The recovery program has not worked, I am in a loop. Desktop never appears

If I reinstall xp pro over the previous installation, will it wipe out my
outlook express folders and data? Will I have to download and reinstall svc
paks 1 2 3
or is 3 inclusive of 2 and 1?

Your problem sounds just like what happened to me when I installed 'Roxio Easy Media Creator 10'. The 'Roxio EMC 10' installer deleted every file on the root drive! Not folders, just files, like boot.ini and ntldr. Unbelievable!

Anyway, something may have deleted files on your root drive too. After you copied the files your PC wouldn't boot because there was no boot.ini and/or ntldr. If you have a backup you need to copy all the files back.

LOL, sorry. I just had a difficult time believing Roxio (or any decent
software manufacturer!) could have been this stupid (to allow that to happen
in the first place). (They must have been on drugs when they released that
version).
