Foreign Language in Menu Bar (still...)
Posted by Itzajob on October 7th, 2005

UPDATED

I recently tried to add Microsoft’s foreign language proofing tools (Serbian
Cyrillic) to my Windows XP Home / Office 2003 system. There was no MUI for
that language and it appeared that I needed to add the Office XP LIP instead.
So I did, and what a mistake! Suddenly my whole system was in Serbian
Cyrillic. (Never install something when all the instructions are in a
language you don’t understand!)

I did a system restore to the day before and almost everything was back in
English. But a thing or two still seem to be in Serbian—e.g., the menu bar
and menus for all Windows folders and some text in dialog boxes.

I checked Control Panel > Regional & Language Settings, and they all specify
English. Also, I checked the Folder Options and Display Properties settings
and didn’t see anything wrong there, either.

I saw the Aug. 21, 2005 “Foreign Language Shows Up” post by Torgeir Bakken
(MVP) in this newsgroup (Windows XP / General) and duly checked the DLL files
he suggested, but nothing there was amiss, either.

Since I was desperate, I then went to RegEdit, searched for “Serbian” and
changed all of those values to “English (US)” -- for example, at
MyComputer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001 \Control\KeyboardLayouts\0000081a
-- EXCEPT for where it seemed to be part of a listing of all possible
languages.

In response to my earlier post, Dave Candy in Australia suggested: “The
language strings are cached (from the dll) in the registry. If so delete the
whole key. It will rebuild.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell NoRoam\MUICache”

It was a good suggestion (and much appreciated--thanks, Dave!), but
unfortunately, it didn’t work in this case.

It is possible (but I don't think likely) that my problem did not result
from the installation of the LIP and subsequent system restore, but rather,
from my inadvertently changing some other setting as I scrolled through the
Language Bar and other settings looking for what was wrong.

Can anyone suggest what I need to fix, reset or search for? Would
installing some sort of English (US) language pack help? Or perhaps running
one of the marvelous WinXP RegEdit fixes on Doug Knox's site at
http://www.dougknox.com?

Thanks in advance to everyone.

At least it wasn't French!

Have you tried to do a restore to a point before the Serbs invaded?

Thanks, Kurt, for your reply.

Yes, I did do a system restore to the day before the problem, and that
restored 80% of the US English to my operating system. But certain things
like the menus for all my Windows folders (e.g., My Documents or Control
Panel) and most dialog box content remained in Serbian.

If I had to guess, I'd guess that there's probably a registry setting off
somewhere.

Here's why: After I did the system restore, I searched the registry for
"Serbian" and replaced several instances of it with "English (US)". I think
this was what fixed a couple minor places where Serbian was still showing up
after the system restore. (For example, the system restore fixed most of the
Control Panel icon captions, but a couple--including Administrative
Tools--remained in Serbian. Now they're back in English.) But it didn't
seem to fix the more serious problems--like Serbian folder menus.

If my guess is correct, then I'd have to find something less obvious than
"Serbian" to search for and change.

Hey guys. Hope all is well. I'm interested in purchasing the above software
for Christmas. But I'd like to know if I have a Dell lap top, does the above
software support the Arabic language? I'd like to converse via e-mail,
instant messenging..etc. Also, is there some sort of template I can lay over
my current keyboard on my lap top that displays the Arabic alaphabet so I can
type in Arabic.
I really appreciate anyone's help regarding this matter.
Thanks so much guys.
Daniel
