What makes you think it new. It should be the only entry.

"Localhost" is your own PC.

You got nothing to worry about.

As long as the IP address is 127.0.0.1, then you should not worry. This is
the standard entry and it normally should be the ONLY entry.

And what makes you think it should be the only entry? Do you have any idea
what the hosts file is used for? If not, please read ...

Cheers.

Because I know the answer. I know what hosts files are. Most of my browsing uses the hosts rather than DNS (DNS servers are sloooow).

Mine's customised with several thousand entries. But here is the one from the XP CD. I count 1 entry.

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

You just made me think of a possible solution to the normal problem of browsing. I don't have the authenication server listed in hosts. I have the ad servers to loopback, the main servers to their IP, but as I never see the authentication server name it never occured to me. As I only authenicate when I open my first non home page, DNS is hanging here. I was getting ready to give up the SMH for good (I delete them from favourites nearly every day and pull the power cord on the computer to punish them).

It's their problem. They insist on these stupid servers as they are stupid. As they were one company (and there aren't many - microsoft can't, sensis can't, but google can) that could actually serve up web pages.
