How do I format usb drive as fat32
Posted by David Sewell on November 5th, 2005

Hi ya,
Please advise on this. I am trying to use disk management on win xp home to
format a hard drive connected through a usb ide adaptor to fat32, but when I
get to the format stage I am only offered the option of ntfs ( which is what
my internal boot drive is) so can it be done and how or am I forced to fit
the drive internal to do it ?
I want the drive fat32 because I have another drivein the machine with win
98se on it.
Thank you.
David

If the hard drive is greater than 32GB, XP will only give you NTFS format
option. Use Windows 98 to format the drive.

WinXP will not create a FAT32 partition larger than 32GB.

Go to the manufacturers website. Many have utility for doing exactly what
you're trying to do with FAT32.

Another option is to remove the hard drive and attach it to your PC at the
ide cable. Partition with Win98's Fdisk, large drive support option.
Format it. Put the hard drive back in the enclosure, business as usual.
This is assuming your onboard bios can detect the HD at its proper capacity.
