I need to print from two windows 2000 servers within a domain, to an
external partners XP Pro machine that is behind a linksys router. Attached
to the XP Pro machine are two printers, one laser printer connected via USB,
and one label printer connected via LPT1.
The two servers are located in a domain environment, behind a Cisco PIX
firewall.
The XP Pro machine is a stand-alone machine in the remote location and is a
member of a workgroup. The XP Pro machine is running a software firewall,
since the Linksys has ports 139 & 445 opened to the net. The software
firewall is protecting the machine, and only allowing the two specific IP's
from the external servers to access it via those two ports.
The printers are shared out. From the servers I can see the shared printers,
but as soon as I try to add them to the local servers it errors out saying
it cannot connect to the printer. The printers have the guest account
enabled, and it has print access. From what I have read, this is the account
that would be trying to access the printers.
This seems like such a simple thing to accomplish, printing from a domain to
a couple workgroup printers across the net, but it has proved to be quite a
challenge.
If anyone can shed some light on how to accomplish this, I would be very
appreciative.
I don't particularly like the fact that the machine on the other side is
exposed the way it is, but without a real hardware firewall in place, I
don't see what other solutions might be available.
Cheers,
Tim
