Interesting Issue - Desktop Icons...
Posted by quartercol on January 13th, 2006

I am using windows xp prof w/ sp2 that is not on a domain! I hid my desktop
icons by right clicking on the desktop and unchecked Show Desktop Icons on
the Arrange Icons By Menu! When I wanted to show the the icons back on the
desktop, all items under the Arrange Icons By Menu are now greyed out (Name,
Size, Type, Modified, Show in Groups, Auto Arrange, and Align to Grid)! When
I go to Display Properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop, I do not have a
Web tab anymore! I read that maybe I needed to turn on active desktop. When I
do right click on a web item and choose to Set as Desktop Item, I do not get
any notifications that I need to enable active desktop. I have checked the
registry for proper settings for the desktop and I also have checked my group
policy to make sure no changes have been made. If I switch to the
administrator account, the desktop icons are displayed. I have checked my
desktop folder and the icons are there. I have checked for spyware and
viruses - none. I have ran out of ideas and cannot find any documentation.
Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, or urls that can lead me in the
right direction??? Thanks in advance!

This is by design of Windows. When you hide all desktop icons these menu options are dimmed.

Take a look at this article:

Thank you Daniel, I happen to stumble across that web site shortly after my
earlier post and it corected my problem - but you hit the nail on the head.
