Invalid Volume License
Posted by Mike on October 4th, 2005

I obtained my Windows XP Pro CD from a volume license at my last company.
For three years, I worked at my home. Now that I no longer am employed with
the company, MS says my copy is not valid for upgrades. I purchased a new
Win XP Pro CD with a valid COA and Key. The problem is that I have over 100
programs loaded on this computer and don't want to necessarily do a clean
install of Windows again. Is there a method where I can modify the registry
and insert the new CD key and validate my installation?

You'll need a "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional,
then proceed with a "Repair Install" using the new CD and
Product Key. You cannot simply change the Product Key
in the registry because the original installation was performed
using a volume licensed version of Windows XP.
