Katrina "victim" needs XP advice
Posted by hankB on October 10th, 2005

When I returned from my 27 day escape my setup worked fine-the leaky roof
missed it.2 days ago a fellow evacuee who has lost his house/job/car spent
the night with uis and to thank us insisted in loading a game on our
computer. We declined but eventually gave in.Was it that or the internet
surfing he did-I dunno but since then we had a number of new icons appear on
the desk top labeled " free gas ", "free cable" and "Winfix 2005",none of
which we clicked. We couldn't open any pages (Firefox,e-mail) and even after
multiple re-boots using the button on the front of the machine (it won't
close via "start-close" pathway, we still can't open any programs. Our
visitor has left and we can't be too harsh on him-he's got more than enough
to deal with .My usual help is through the university (now closed until
January) via my part-time faculty post.
Getting computer help anywhere here in metro N.O. is as unlikely as
buying sheetrock or getting a roofer.
Is there a "reinstitue basic settings" or an easy "reformat" possibility in
Win XP?

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

Try a restore point prior installing the new programs, then connect, update
and clean everything.

There is System Restore. Click on Start->All
Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore. This will bring up
the System Restore wizard. Select a restore point from the calendar,
choose the most recent from *before* your guest made changes to or used
the system. Complete the wizard and your system will be restored to how
it was before the changes were made.
