Missing D: Hard Drive after reformat of c: drive in XP Home
Posted by bob4866 on April 16th, 2006

My system worked correctly, if somewhat slow, so I reformatted the c: drive
after moving data to the d: drive. (Both are Maxtor 200 Gb drives). After
restoring from the supplied disc all is well but I cannot see or access the
d: drive from windows explorer. I have redone the restore several times but
no change. In BIOS or Computer management the drive is seen. In defrag the
disc is not there!

I have downloaded a program from the Maxtor site that tells me all is well
and all connections are good.

How can I get Windows XP to see the other drive?

Click Start / Run / diskmgmt.msc, then assign a drive
letter to this drive.

Have tried that but all choices are grayed out except 'delete' or help. Any
other ideas as I cannot see a drive letter but the drive is shown as 'active'
and 'healthy' in Disk Management.

What file system does the Disk Managr report for the problem disk?

bob:
Try this...

Disconnect your secondary HD and boot *only* with your primary HD connected.
Shut down the machine, reconnect the secondary HD (making sure your
connections are proper & secure) and boot. Hopefully the secondary HD will
be detected by the OS. If not, access Disk Management again and see if you
can then assign a drive letter.

If still no go, try connecting that secondary HD on a different IDE channel
or change its Master/Slave relationship on the same IDE channel.

The affected disk is NTFS

Tried all this Anna - but no change

I have also noticed that in 'Device Manager' the c: drive has 'Device Usage'
greyed out but the d: drive has 'Use this Device' showing, with a choice of
'Do not use this device' available - is this important?

bob:
Are you saying that even when you've connected that 2nd HD along the lines I
recommended in my second paragraph above, the problem still exists? That is,
your BIOS detects that drive but the system still doesn't recognize it?

You're sure you've properly used the HD diagnostic utility that you
downloaded from Maxtor and the drive checks out OK, right? Did you try the
full test as well. And you're absolutely sure you've properly
connected/jumpered the HD, yes?

I don't know what else to advise you. If the drive and its IDE data cable is
non-defective, and you've properly connected/jumpered the device I honestly
don't know of any reason in your situation why the drive is not detected by
the OS.

It's time to get an independent opinion. Boot your machine with
a Win98 boot disk (www.bootdisk.com), then run this command:
ntfsdos /L:MNOP. You can get ntfsdos.exe from
www.sysinternal.com.
One of the drive letters M:, N:, O: or P: is supposed to show
you the contents of your inaccessible disks. Does it? If so,
which drive letter?
