Can anyone suggest a method of transferring about 1G of various files from an
old PC with W 95 to a new PC using W XP Pro SP 2?

If it's W95B with USB, you could use an external HDD, CD or Flash drive.
If it has a NIC, connect it via hub/switch/router or crossover cable and
transfer via network.
If none of the above, get a geek to move the HDD from the old machine and
slave it in the new one.

if the new machine has a floppy THEN do it one folder at a time.
I just moved 50 folders with all their files.

Probably the fastest way to do this is to remove the drive from the old
machine and temporarily install it in the new machine, setting drive jumpers
appropriately.
Another good approach is to get a USB2 external drive case, remove the drive
from the old machine and connect it to the USB drive case. Plug the USB
case in to the new machine and it will, things being as they should, be
promptly recognised.
Another way is to network the computers, share the W9x machine drive and
connect to it from the XP machine. Map the old drive to a drive letter in
Windows XP explorer. This will be slower, and if you don't already have a
network card and a hub or router, may be more complicated than you want.
Then, use FileSync (www.fileware.co.uk) to copy the drive contents to a
folder on the new machine. I usually create a folder called OldDrive.
Let FileSync scan the drives, then tell it to synchronize - then go for
dinner. Once you've had dinner, it should be done and you can just go
and delete the folders you don't need from the OldDrive folder.
FileSync is much better behaved than the MS tools; if it encounters files it
can't copy, it will simply list them and move on rather than quietly give
up.
You might also want to just quickly scan the old drive for files you really
don't need to copy, like the Windows swap file and various temp files and
delete them.

Get a USB2 drive case! This will take significantly less time, be about
$30, and when you're done you can just pop the old drive back in the case.
Then, get a new larger hard disk, put it in the USB case, and you'll have a
reasonable backup drive you can connect when needed.

Did Win95 systems support USB? Never heard of this
before. May be wrong. Win98SE supported USB1 if
the mobo supported USB1
I vote for removing the HD from the old PC and slaving
it into the new PC. Fast and simple if you can figure out
the jumper configuraton.

An MS CD was sold called win95B w/USB. I still have a few of them.
Still, it was just the beginning of USB support, and you really wanted
win98 to use USB
