- Moving XP Pro to another Machine
- Posted by Mike on November 4th, 2005
Dear Colleagues,
I installed XP Pro with its serial number, etc on what is now an old
dead machine. I want XP Pro for different machine now. Is there a
way to cancel the original "machine matching vs serial number" so it
can be moved? Does one go through Microsoft to do such a thing and, if
so, does anyone have a telephone number.
All inpupt is appreciated..
Thanks,
Mike

If you're using an OEM version of the system, it cannot be transferred
to another computer.
If you not using an OEM system, just install it on the new computer.
(And delete it from the old one, or somehow make sure the OS will no
longer be used on that machine.) It will want to be activated, and you
will very likely be able to do that via the Internet with no trouble.
If that doesn't work, just call the phone number that will be shown to
you and explain what's going on. They'll get you activated.

There is no "de-activation" process, as such.
Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not legitimately
transferable), simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on
and then install it on the new computer. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, the you'll most
likely be able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
