the first thing i would look at is to open the case and check ALL the fans
are going, it could be an overheating problem. pete

hhmmm, have you had the pc for a while, it happened to me about 6 months ago
and it turned out to be the power supply, but it was strange as it only
happened when i burnt a cd, but i think the drive was taking power from the
power supply and it couldnt supply enough, but i replaced the power supply
and i have not had a problem since, just a thought, does it just turn off
like you were switching it off at the plug or does it shutdown like normal???

Could be that cpu is over-heating. Have a look at system health properties in
BIOS & check temperature of CPU.
I also had an issue like this once and it turned out that the power supply
wasnt distributing enough power across the board, and was resolved by buying
a 55W power supply

I would think it is a power supply issue. I had one do the same thing when I
added an extra hard drive. The old one just could not spin it up without
shutting down.

i had mine about 4 years, if i was you i would take it back to the shop,
everybody that has replied to your post is 99% certain that it sound like the
power supply so i would get it checked over or just replace it yourself. pete
