What type of attachment is it and what is your default email program?
Depending on the file type, you may need to reset the association in Control
Panel->Folder Options->File Types. Highlight the extension for your
received file to see what is currently associated for opening this file
type.
It may very well be that the file type cannot be opened by you unless you
have the appropriate program installed that can access that file type. If
yes, you may want to ask the sender to resend it to you in a format for
which you have an associated program installed.

If you are using OUTLOOK, go to tools - options - security -change
automatic download settings and uncheck the two boxes.

One person I know sends me .WMV or whatever windows video files are and are
sent as "code' rather than an attachment, why?
(I get 4MB's of
$#VDFG%$^TRYT%$TRGFGFGFT%$^T%T%RGFHTR&&^%&THGH%T&Y ^%Y%^Y^%%^^%)()((()()()&*^UKTKU^U&^)_()*)(&^O&^ )
rather than the link - "this movie.wmv" Its creepy.

Brandon,
Can a smaller (under 1 MB) .wmv file be sent? Maybe there's a size limit for
your e-mail attachments.

Your friend needs to make the attachment to a plain text message.

To Drew: I use hotmail with opera - IE, no idea what She uses, so I can send
up to 10MB, she can obviously send a similar amount (@ 5-9 MB, the file is
embedded in the text rather than an attatchment).
To Ron;
The friend will just send off as a FW: like the 20 before her. I can wait
for the page to download, 'copy all' and insert into a notepad and 'save as'
(guesswork from here - .WAV, .AVI, .WMV....). Ive already told her to save
the file and send as an attatchment but shes not that bright I guess.
The whole just things sucks when my browser freezes because I try to open
her random crap. Oh well. Thanks guys.

Brandon,
Rereading your e-mail, it looks like the file might be renamed but without
first unhiding the extension (.wmv). If you rename a .txt file without
unhiding, it looks like 'movie.wmv' but in fact is 'movie.wmv.txt'. She
needs to go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab, uncheck 'Hide
extensions for known file types', click OK. Now the file should look like
movie.wmv. Not sure why she would want to rename it though.
My other suggestion is sending the movie inside an attachment. If she has
WinZip,
* Click the WinZip shortcut in the Start menu to open a new Zip window
* Drag the .wmv file into the open Zip window (another window opens)
* under the 'Add to archive' heading, add the name of the zip file you are
making to the already shown path.
example: 'shown path' is C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents,
name of zip file added to path: C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My
Documents\movie.zip
* click 'Add', x-out of the new zip (the .wmv file should be showing if done
correctly)
* Open a new e-mail, drag the zip into the new message body & send
Drew

Thanks Drew.
She is not renaming the file. She gets an email from "X" friend , watches it
and Frwds it to friends "A"-"D" , like everyone else. I was wondering how she
failed so often at what everyone else does so easily. I assume its her
browser or email reader.
When the movie comes to me there is no movie, just its code embedded in the
page. I will take this code and make it into a movie file which I could then
email to other people again if I so wished. I was simply curious as to how
she is mucking up the "forward" to process to embed the movie into the text.
I've already told her how to fix it but she either doesn't care or isn't
that technical.
most likely both. Thanks for the tips though.
