no icons in taskbar after windows update
Posted by Hexe on April 13th, 2006

This morning I installed the latetst fixes advertised by Windows Update
(911567,912812,890830,908531,911562,911565,911567) on a notebook with Windows
XP Tabled Edition and now explorer.exe refuses to show any icons in the
taskbar, i.e. if I start a new process it does not appear and if I minimize
the app it still does not appear. The process is running and I can switch to
it. All I have in the taskbar is the Tablet PC Input Panel which takes up the
whole taskbar and the resize bar to the left of it cannot be used to resize
it. The Start menu is there and so is the Notification Area.

The Windows Update log looks sort of ok. There were a few FATAL errors, but
they always appear. The download and install for each of the patches seems to
have worked ok. The individual KB*.log also look sort of ok except for the
claims that update.ver is not correct which always appear. I still have 5
temp directories and 4 files in the softwaredistribution/download.

Only 908531 seems to be related to explorer. Is there a known issue with it
that is not yet documented?

Anything I can do to get some more data on what could be the problem?

Apparently unregistering tipband.dll, rebooting, reregistering tipband.dll,
rebooting seemed to fix the problem. The reboots in between are vital.

I had replied here about half hour after Hexe posted it using the
Microsoft forum tools, but somehow the article got censored, at least
it is not showing up in google. So here is the fix again:
