NTLDR missing
Posted by Talib on December 27th, 2007

Hi All,
I have a problem booting my windows xp pro sp2 OS.
It shows NTLDR missing.

Is there a way to restore this file or I'll have to reinstall or repair the
OS?

John,
I had the same problem and i got the procedure from Dell. But it seems that
when I get a windows update, the file goes missing again. do you think i
have to reinstall the operating system in full or do you think that perhaps
my installation of CA Internet Security may have corrupted my files and if i
do a system restore to a point prior to the installation of that program i
could fix it?

I have had Trojans that delete the NTLDR file repeatedly

Trojans do NOT delete NTLDR. It is counter-productive.
Trojans have a payload and desire to be running on a PC for as long as possible. If they
delete the NTLDR then the PC is incapable of booting and thus the Trojan will NOT be running
and thus its payload is inactive.

Since you made the claim, "...had Trojans that delete the NTLDR file...", please dig into
your logs and provide the name of the anti virus/anti malware software that found the Trojan
performing this action and the name of the Trojan that anti virus/anti malware software
declared the Trojan to be.

Hey, David.....
Virtumonde ate up all in my laptop. Am desperate for a repair. Broke my
wrist JUL2007 and had to stop. Now trying again.
Am running Pav. HP zx5000 laptop. OEM xp home. Blv I upgraded it to Xp Pro.

My recovery disks don't work. When I turn it on: "NTLDR is Missing". I was
able to get to System setup and BIOS today. Nothing helps.

Can anybody?????

Thanks..

Do you have more than 1 partition? I had that problem when I partition my HD
into 3.
C=XP, D=XP_clone and E=Store. Somehow the partition with XP_clone became
partition 3 and my boot was looking for it on partition 2. I got NTLDR
missing every time until I fixed boot.ini.

One easy way to fix this is to copy NTDLR from one PC to another.
Remove the hard disk of the PC failing with thet "NTDLR Can't be found" type messages and
put in in a PC with the same OS. In your case XP.

Explore the root of the "C:" drive making shore all files type "Hidden and System" are will
be seen in Explorer.
Copy C:\NTDLR from the working PC to the hard disk of the failed system (likely "D:").

Put the drive back in the PC. See if it boots. It should.
The file; C:\NTDLR should marked with the "Hidden" and "System" attributes.

The Vundo Trojan/Vittumonde adware can be PITA. However I haven't seen anything where they
targeted C:\NTDLR .
