Tech Support > Microsoft Windows > only classic theme
only classic theme
Posted by bb25 on October 28th, 2005

Hi, I'm from holland and I would like to ask a question.
I have a problem with an alienware skin so I tried to restore the windows
default theme, but after i did that i got the classic theme. Then I went to
Appearance to change it back to XP style, but i can only choose classic.

I tried to restart the themeservice with services.msc, but it gives me
"error 1053" and I can't apply the lunatheme from
c:\windows\resources\themes\luna, it gives me an error.

What can i do to fix this?

Hi bb25

Try this fix from MVP Kelly's site:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Scroll down to line 214 on the right, and click on Windows XP Style
Changes to Classic. There are instructions on how to run the .reg file
at the top of the page.

You could also try line 187, right-hand side, Restore Luna Theme.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response, i tried all those things before posting here. This
has something to do with the themeservice. It won't restart and it won't load
the luna theme. I think i have to reinstall the service or something, but how?

From http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=278712

CAUSE
This behavior may occur because the error message is displayed when the
service takes more than three minutes to respond. This arbitrary time limit
had been set with the intention that the user or administrator should be
advised of the service status when this time limit is reached. However, the
wording of the message may give the impression to the user that the service
is unable to start, when in fact the service may simply be taking a very
long time to start.

The preceding error message is misleading because the service may still be
in a Start Pending state.
RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, you must clear the error message and continue
to check for the service to start. If the service does not start, you must
check the System event log for Service Control Manager errors related to the
service that is being monitored. If no error is posted to the event log, the
service should eventually start.

For more information about troubleshooting Service Control Manager errors,
please refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

To check the Event logs, use these steps:

Click Start, Run and type eventvwr.msc
Select System entry in the left pane
In the right-pane, look for the Service Control related messages.

Double-click the entry and you'll see more information in the resulting
dialog. Click the copy button at the top and copy the whole event and paste
it to a Notepad document and save it. Post the information here.
