- Posted by Michael on December 6th, 2005
Hi,
Can anybody point me to some reference regarding how many transactions take place on Usenets, Mailing lists and Web-Based forums all over the (Internet) World a month?
Thanks,
Mikel.

I have absolutely no idea where you'd get such information, or whether
there's any place it's collected at all, or whether it would be at all
accurate if it were. Try googling.

We figured it was homework. ;-) I'm sorry, but you're going to have to
do the research yourself. Use Google, although I very much doubt this
information is available anywhere. Most ISP's offer newsgroups as do
many private companies. There are Usenet servers all over the world and
posts are propagated to them. There isn't just one huge Usenet server
where you could get some estimate of the traffic.
You might try this search for free news servers:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...rs&btnG=Search
Most of the sites have listings of which newsgroups each server carries,
retention rates, that sort of thing. Maybe you could extrapolate
traffic from that and then look at information about their newsgroups
from big ISP's.

What you ask for is IMPOSSIBLE to determine. There are simply too many variables and to
make matters worse, this is a global village. Nobody maintains public records. And there
private networks and forums that exceed your wildest imagination--such as .mil for US
military when generates millions of transactions a day. I consulted my Ouija board to
conjure up a rough estimate per day: 4.7 billion world-wide transactions a day (including
SPAM).
There's simply no way to ever determine how many mailing lists exists or how large these
would be. I have over 50 names in my dinky little mailing list alone. LockerGnome, on the
other hand, sends out 300,000+ issues a day.
Again, what you ask for is IMPOSSIBLE. Not even the United States National Security
Agency (NSA) at Fort Meade, MD could give you a reliable figure, and it acquires and
analyzes all civilian and military email posting for the existence of certain keywords.
