Password-Protected Sites
Posted by SeaOtter on February 5th, 2006

I installed a program, SIW, which will tell you all kinds of information
about your system. It has a section called secrets which will tell your key
code for Windows XP and MS Office. But it also comes up with IE:
Password-Protected sites. In my case it shows two, user name and password
for both sites. I wonder who else can see this information? I have cleared
cookies, cache, and history-no joy...

let's see now. There would be Bill Gates for one, then George Bush or would
that be the other way around. Then there would be ME....Just
kidding..Hopeful no one would see this file unless you let any apps phone
home or to those others I mentioned.

Post a link to the SW and I will give it a try.

I don't know the particular program, but unless the data is protected in
some way (such as with a password) anyone who has access to your computer
can see it. You are perhaps worried more about on-line access, but in many
cases the greater danger is physical access. Realize that it's always
possible for a burglar to steal your computer and look at everything on it
at his leisure.

Probably because you elected for IE to remember username and password
for those sites. I doubt anyone else can see it as long as your system
is properly secured and spyware free. You can go into Internet Options
and turn off Autocomplete, that should clear the names and passwords.

Noting out the ordinary to worry about. There are many apps that work the
same way. Many(most) gather the same info and you don't even know it.

Steve,

Good point, but I have never saved passwords in IE and took the trouble to
delete them (just in case). That's why I'm bothered by them appearing. I do
save password in FireFox and none appear in the SIW scan. Go figure!

Thanks for everyone's imput.
