PC auto shutdown?
Posted by Trevor on January 7th, 2006

Is there any way of setting up a PC (my sons) so it will automatically
shutdown after the CPOU has been idle for x minutes?

I've found several utilities that seem to say they do it but don't.

I don't want to have to run it each time, just to work automatically so the
PC isn't left on for hours on end - my elec bill is heading off
exponentially!

An can I set the PC to automatically shutdown after say 15 mins idle CPU
from this prompt? How?

Have you thought about having the computer go into Hibernation after a
specific period of time? Control Panel, Power Options, Enable hibernation,
System hibernates after ....

Is full shutdown not an option? What's the difference with hibernation? Is
power consumption nil in hibernation?

Just about, Hibernation will put the computer in deep sleep and everything
will be off but settings will be held in memory. You will need to press the
power button to wake up the machine again. You can set the power settings
for the computer to go to Stand By (low power consumption) after a set
period of time and then after that into Hibernation.

glad I was able to help. By the way you can test and see what Hibernation
will be like. After enabling it you can put the computer in Hibernation
immediately if you want by going to start/Turn Off Computer and if you hold
down the Shift key the Stand By icon will change to Hibernate. Click on it
and the computer will go to Hibernation after a few seconds.
