Printer sharing
Posted by Ellei on March 14th, 2006

Have read all the posts. I have 2 computers both on Windows XP. Enabled
printer sharing on one, went to the other and did the Add Printer and it cud
not find the name which I put as \\computername\hppsc240. I guess my
question is do I have to enable file sharing too? Or am I doing something
else wrong? Thanks.

When you go to "Add Printer", select "Network Printer" and then browse to
find it. If XP doesn't find it, then there's a network setup problem.

Hi Gordon...when I click on Add Printer there are 3 options...Browse for
Printer which comes up with Nicrosoftr Windows Network....when I highlight it
is says you need to specify a valid network printer name which I tried
hppsc240 but that doesn't work. Then the 3rd option is Connect to a printer
on the internet or on a home or office network and there is no browse but a
place to enter a URL which I tried but not sure if I'm entering the right
info...format is http://serve_name/Printer/myprinter/.printer

On the compter that is directly attached to the printer you want to share:

Start -> Click on "Printers an Faxes" -> Right Click on printer you
want to share -> make sure dot is on "Share this printer"

You can change the share name to whatever you want.

I do believe that printer and file sharing are linked.. you do not have to
share everything on your computer though.. by default, XP shows a 'shared
document' folder, and does NOT give automatic access to all of the computer,
so most will still be relatively safe..

Okay I did all that and got the name for the shared printer....it's when I go
onto the other PC which is connected thru a linksys router that I am having
the problem. Someone replied that I need to set up file sharing but haven't
been able to do that yet.

Mike when I clicked on file and printer sharing troubleshooter, it says that
the computer names are the same....but when I go to my computer and click on
computer name, one says EllensPC and the other says Gateway-506G.... I'm
getting lost here....I set up the sharing fine on the one PC but cannot add
printer on the other. They are connected via Linksys...both on Windows XP

Start -> Control panel -> Network Connections -> Right Click on the
Network Connection you are using then click "Properties" -> put check
mark "File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks".

I think you only have to do that on the Computer that the printer is
attached to.
