- problem deleting 0k file
- Posted by Buttnut on October 27th, 2005
Hi folks.
I am having a load of trouble deleting a 0k file from my desktop. when
trying to delete it I get the message that cannot read from source or it
does not exist. When going through the command prompt and running attrib it
shows as having an archive, system and hidden attributes but won't let me
remove them - get the message that the files doesn't exist!
I've booted to safe mode, tried other profiles and still no luck.
I've tried killbox but still cannot get rid of this. this is really
aggravating
any ideas?

0 kilobytes as in size? Or 0k is the name of the file?
Run Error Checking. Reboot. Reboot again and then try to delete it.

After backup you might try running;
chkdsk /r
from the recovery console command line. (/r implies /f and /p)
To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows XP
CD-Rom. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press F10 or R to repair a Windows
XP installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The Recovery
Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do not have
the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %systemroot% or %windir%
Also you can try deleting from the recovery console. First you'll need to
Control Panel|Admin Tools|Local Security Policy Recovery console: "Allow
floppy copy and access to all drives/folders" set to enabled
Then from the recovery console command line;
SET allowallpaths = TRUE
to gain access to all folders and try deleting from here.

Thanks for all the help.
I've tried virtually all of the tips and suggestions but still this bugger
is there.
Used our other tools Winternals ERD, EBCD and other Linux boot/file system
recovery tools, but I still cannot get this mofo to disappear
The file shows up in all file system managers as having an archive, system
and hidden attribute (some show read only).
I have tried to remove all the attributes and then delete it but I get the
message that the file cannot be found!! this after the attib function shows
the file listed. (and of course windows explorer/desktop environment shows
it too)
Any other Ideas. This is one of those things that will kill me.

There was a similar thread on the server security newsgroup a while back
which you may want to take a look at in the link below. I don't know what
you have all tried but tools like subinacls or fileacl may be worth a try to
force ownership. --- Steve

Tried these both subinacls and fileacl. The subinacls told me that it
changed ownership of the file but when I try to delete it I still get the
message that it cannot read from disk.

I heartily endorse it.
It appears that 'undeletable' 0k (size) files on the desktop often
result from saving attachments in emails received in Outlook Express or
Outlook (reading the emails on the Web mail site itself and downloading
the attachment does not seem to create any problem), and the names of
the attached files usually have two or more dots. E.g., the one that
gave me hell was "Road Signs , It happens only in INDIA ....."
The program divfinst.exe available from the URL mentioned by RoadRunnah
worked like magic.

still cannot get rid of the bastard.
I ran a rootkit revealer from sysinternals and it showed the file as a 'Zone
Identifier Object'
I am at a loss I've tried all the suggestions here plus used every tool I
could find to log in a alternate users outside of the OS (boot/recovery
tools - Linux and Windows)
I've used systernals tools to log in as the system account to try and delete
but still I am unable to. The file name is CAOPU5FG.
Anyone have any other things I could try?
Please post here.
Thank You in advance
