Problem with rights on Windows XP in domain
Posted by Brian Nielsen on November 3rd, 2005

Hi

I have a Windows XP (SP1 or SP2 ; have not tested without SP) workstation,
whcich I have added to a domain that have 1 domain controller (DC) running
Windows 2003 or Windows 2000 Server (2 different setups).

The test-problem:
1. Logon XP with user X that is not member of domain admins group.
2. On XP Open "Device Manager" and verify that you have not administrator
rights.
3. Add user X to "Domain Admiins" group on Domain Controller.
4. Relogon XP using user X.
5. Now when you open "Device Manager" you still dont have Administrator
rights.
6. Relogon XP using user X.
7. Now when you open "Device Manager" you have Administrator rights.

Can anyone answer me why the gorup rights are not applied to user X after 1
relogon?

I have tried adding the XP machine to a Windows 2000 DC and here it have the
same problem.
I have tried adding a Win2k workstation to Windows 2003 server and the group
rights are updated after 1 relogon as expected.

So it is a problem with Windows XP.

Does anyone knows how to get around this problem?
Either by using a tool or in some other way?

Hope someone can help me.

Best regards
Brian Nielsen
