Problems copying "documents and settings" from another HD - Please Help!
Posted by Polly2Carpets on November 8th, 2005

Hi

My PC died on me at the weekend. To cut a long and expensive story
short I have rebuilt and had to buy a new HD. Once the system was back
up and running again, I decided to connect my old HD to see if I could
retrieve some of my files.

When I try to access D:\Documents and Settings\Simon and Rachel (the
folder that contains the files) I get the following error:

"D:\Documents and Settings\Simon and Rachel is not accessible

Access is denied"

Is there any way of getting into this folder so I can copy some of my
files to my new C: Drive?

Any ideas would be more than welcome

P.S. Both drives are NTFS (Don't know if that's of significance).

You may need to take ownership of the files. Take a look here
for
the procedure:

How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;308421

Note: If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you
must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an
account that has Administrative rights to have access to the
Security tab. To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.

Good luck

ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON!

Thanks very much for your posting. I followed the link and applied the
procedure - instant and full access!

Your help has meant that I can now retrieve my files that I had, up
until now, thought lost with the system failure.

Thanks very much indeed, I'm very grateful
