Problems with playing MPEG files in IE (XP machine)
Posted by Docwho via WindowsKB.com on October 18th, 2005

Hi, I posted this same issue in the IE forum but as I am not sure where the
problem originates I am posting here as well.

have XP Pro SP 2 and all latest updates.

I cannot play MPEG video files by clicking on the link in IE - Windows Media
player
just says connecting.... for ever. CPU goes up to 98-99%, no error message.
If I close WMP there is still a rogue process using all CPU remaining that I
have to close down in Task Manager.

Few Important Points:
1. Used to work fine - at some point it stopped working - I suspect a spyware
protection program changed some settings. I run or have tried a few of them.
(Yes I have tried disabling them and the firewall - doesn't help)

2. If I save the MPEG file to disk first I can play it perfectly from inside
WMP. Additionally I have absolutely no problems running the same MPEG link in
WMP if I click on it from inside Firefox!

3. I have tried setting my security setting to lowest but still didn't help.

Considering that WMP can play the MPEG file perfectly in standalone mode and
perfectly if linked from Firefox I presume the problem lies somewhere in the
communication between IE and WMP. Also the fact that it used to work fine
means something has changed - but for the life of me I don't know what.

Looking forward to any help with this head-scratcher.

I would download and install WMP 10 from http://support.microsoft.com/.
